Project Overview.
During my internship at NODE, I worked on TraitDrop for their opening exhibition. CryptoPunks are one of the most recognizable digital art collections, but their magic can be hard to explain if you do not already know the world around them.
Each CryptoPunk is made from a set of traits, and understanding those traits is really the first step to understanding the collection.
TraitDrop turned that system into a physical collecting experience inspired by blind boxes and gacha machines.

Process.
Planning
I started by asking a pretty simple question: how do you explain the magic of CryptoPunks? It lies in the randomness and the feeling of claiming something.

Exploring
I designed TraitDrop as a series of drops, where each release would introduce a different CryptoPunk trait category. The first installation focused on heads, the foundation of every Punk.
Future drops would have added traits like glasses, facial hair, hair or hats, and mouth details. Over time, visitors could collect the pieces needed to build a whole Punk.
For the first drop, we produced 1,000 pins based on the original CryptoPunk heads, with proportions that reflected the actual collection.
The rarity and randomness of the collection was not just explained in words, it was something you could physically encounter.

Given 1000 total pins, there were 1 alien, 3 apes, 9 zombies, 110 woman 1, 172 man 1, 118 woman 2, 185 man 2, 115 woman 3, 186 man 3, 42 woman 4, 59 man 4.
Making + Refining
I made initial steps to source a large gumball machine, coordinated pin production, designed the packaging, and worked through how the mechanical dispensing experience could bring the drop to life.
Visitors could turn the crank, receive a random pin, and take home a small piece of the collection. It made digital scarcity feel social, physical, and a little bit lucky.
